A novel mobile app for pregnant women with gestational diabetes on a diet
Specialists of the Research Laboratory of Metabolic Disorders and Microbiota at the WCRC for Personalized Medicine have developed a personal assistant mobile application that can choose the composition of meals for pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
High blood sugar during pregnancy leads to pregnancy complications, poor pregnancy outcomes (e.g., birth injuries because of the baby’s large size) and long-term consequences such as obesity and diabetes in the offspring.
To prevent adverse outcomes, blood sugar levels during pregnancy should be as close to normal as possible.
DiaCompanion is an application to help achieve this health goal. The model developed by the project team predicts the blood sugar level in a woman with gestational diabetes after a certain meal. In case of high sugar levels, the application evaluates the reasons behind the increase and shows nutritional recommendations to prevent hyperglycemia.
There are no Russian counterpart applications based on glycemia level prediction with nutritional recommendations. Among foreign counterparts, there are applications for pregnant women with GDM, which give nutritional recommendations but they have no estimations of glycemia before each meal.
DiaCompanion can be used in the field of endocrinology, obstetrics and gynecology in pregnant women with gestational diabetes on diet therapy.
