Almazov Centre gets the status of a world-class research centre

Almazov National Medical Research Centre won the grant competition to create and develop world-class research centres involved in research in the priority areas of science and technology and attained the status of a world-class research centre (WCRC).

The competition was held by the Council for State Support for the Creation and Development of World-Class Research Centres carrying out R&D in the priority areas of science and technology, together with the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

The Council approved a list of 10 World-Class Research Centres in 6 priority areas.

The government support for the area “Personalized medicine, high-tech healthcare and health-preserving technologies” will be provided to the WCRC for Personalized Medicine established at Almazov Centre and the Institute of Experimental Medicine. The goal of the project is to reduce morbidity and mortality from diseases through innovative development of health care based on the development of modern technologies of personalized medicine. Major areas of WCRC will include: population genetics and polygenic non-communicable diseases; unknown, rare and genetically determined diseases; cancer; infectious diseases; microbial and antimicrobial therapy.

Almazov Centre is a leading Russian medical centre developing innovative medical technologies for the modernization of national health care. By 2023, it plans to build a new Research and Educational Facility as an innovative project for the implementation of new educational technologies for continuous training of specialists to ensure the provision of high-tech medical care. The Science City to be created at Almazov Centre will provide qualified professionals for the Russian health care sector. It will comprise facilities for training, research, accommodation and recreation of medical specialists.

According to Director General of Almazov Centre, Prof. Evgeny Shlyakhto, the total area of 65,000 sq. m will consolidate the learning and living process and create a unique atmosphere for the scientific medical community.
